The successive braces adjustments at Ora R. Canter, DDS Orthodontics‘s Astoria, New York orthodontic clinic have been designed to gradually alter the position and alignment of your teeth. Each time your braces were tightened, it acted to stretch the periodontal ligaments that secure each tooth in it’s socket.

In the end, this will provide you with a more appealing smile and a mouth less prone to issues like enamel attrition and dental fractures.

Now that your teeth are nearing their ideal alignment, your Ora R. Canter, DDS Orthodontics orthodontist will soon be able to remove your braces.

Yet this is not the end of the realignment process. The periodontal ligaments attached to each of your teeth will still have a fair amount of tension affecting them. Without taking measures to counter it, this residual tension could cause your teeth to relapse.

The most effective way to prevent this from happening is to have your orthodontist fit you for a Hawley retainer. This removable mouthpiece will be custom designed to fit the unique shape of your mouth, and lock into place with a series of wires that correspond to your teeth.

Wearing the retainer during the required times will help ensure that your teeth do not drift out of alignment. It will also minimize the total amount of time needed to use the retainer.

You will need to take the unit out of your mouth when you eat. Try to store it in the case provided to keep it safe and clean. If you notice some plaque buildup on the Hawley retainer, you can rinse it away in an equal mixture of antiseptic mouthwash and cool water.
