For people new to braces, eating can be a discouraging affair. There are many food favorites that you cannot eat while wearing braces, such as sticky caramel, nuts, and popcorn. However, don’t despair! There are still plenty of foods you CAN eat! Here are some party-friendly dessert ideas to indulge in occasionally, even while wearing braces.

Chocolate: While you should certainly avoid chocolate’s frequent partner, sticky caramel, you don’t need to worry about chocolate itself. Dark chocolate is best for mouth health, as it is lower in sugar. Avoid mixed filled chocolates and bridge mix, as these both can contain fillings that can damage braces. For a fun adventure, try making your own chocolates with soft, braces-friendly fillings, such as fondant or jam. Be sure to share some with your orthodontist at your next appointment!

Pies: Always a hit with guests, a beautifully decorated, show-stopping pie can be a gorgeous centerpiece at a party or dinner. Just be sure to avoid nuts (sorry, pecan pie!). Instead, try a mile-high, toasty lemon meringue, a delightful mixed berry pie, or a custard tart. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss extra carefully on the days you eat sugar! It can also help to eat desserts closer to mealtime, as more saliva is present during a meal. This helps clean your teeth. Remember to accompany all desserts with a tall glass of water!
